Medici on 57th Welcome to the Medici

The Medici, originally a gallery and coffee house, was located behind the Green Door bookshop. Hans Morsbach bought it in 1962 for $1750. While it remains one of the best coffee houses in the city, the Medici has long offered a full menu. It is now located on 57th Street between Kimbark and Kenwood Avenues near the University of Chicago campus.

Lunch and Dinner

Open for lunch and dinner, The Medici serves an eclectic menu, is known for it’s Chicago style pizza, some of the “best hamburgers in Chicago,” baked-goods and desserts. The setting is casual and the architecture, artwork and sculptures provide a unique and intellectually stimulating atmosphere.

Brunch

The Medici also serves a fantastic brunch on Saturday and Sunday from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Medici brunch features fresh-squeezed orange juice, lox and bagels, eggs benedict and other specialties.

Out-Door Patio

Patrons cans dine on a roof-top patio rated one of Chicago’s finest. Even on hot days, umbrellas and dappled shade from a canopy of trees make out-door dining very enjoyable. Street noise is not a problem, as the patio is located at the back of the restaurant.

BYOB

The Medici is located in a dry district. If you enjoy wine with your meal, all we can offer is a wine opener. Please feel free to bring your own.

Though it was not easy, and sometimes the odds were long, the Medici grew from humble beginnings to Hyde Park’s largest restaurant. The Medici staff and I are grateful for the loyalty and support of our customers who allowed us to become a success.
